Diaper Cake Part 2

In my last post I gave a little overview of how I made a grand diaper cake. Here's a how-to on a smaller scale in case you want to take on this feet.

First of all, I whipped this "cake" up a little faster than I think I should have. Time flies I tell you! On the other hand the Mum and Dad to be loooooved my creative gift for their shower.

The first step is to buy the supplies. With this cake I went small scale compared to the cake in my previous post. The important thing to think about is to 1.) have something that you can put in the middle (ie snack containers, bath supplies, Gerber Graduate puff containers) 2.) things that you can hang off of the cake (ie bibs, onesies, pacifiers, spoons, toys) 3.)diapers (sizes newborn through 3. Different brands have different pictures. Huggies tend to have Disney themes, while Pampers have Sesame Street, and store brands have neat designs) 4.) Lots of rubber bands and ribbon. (Typically fabric ribbon is the prettiest. On this cake, Target only had a small selection of ribbon available and it was pretty much a choice between white or pink curling ribbon.)

Here is a layout of some of the supplies I chose for this cake. I went with a bath theme.

The second step is to roll all of the diapers you have. I prefer rolling the diapers. I've seen the flat diaper fan cakes and I can only imagine how many diapers that would require. For an average size cake I suggest 80 diapers. This cake I used a package of 40 size ones and 36 newborns.

If you use a pretty design diaper, I would roll from the waist portion into the bottom. For the diapers I bought, I wanted to show the Sesame Street theme so I rolled from the bottom to the waist.

2.) Roll

3.) Band. Remember you will be hiding rubber bands with ribbon.

You can also double band to save some time when stacking but don't go more than two to a band.

Next you will want to start stacking your bottom layer. With this cake I chose to use the head wetting canister as the middle with some of the bath products to stack up the rest of the cake middle. Use a large rubber band to band around the base of the cake so it doesn't fall all over the place.

Do the same thing for your middle layer by adding your middle pieces and banding the middle ring of diapers with a large rubber band. This layer will be smaller than the base layer.

Finally do the same thing for the top layer which will be smaller than the middle layer. I often put the newborn or smallest size diapers at the top. You will have a completed cake tower with many rubber bands that need to be hidden with ribbon and outer decorations.

For the ribbon you want to take your pretty ribbon and wrap it around the cake to hide the rubber bands. You also want to remember to thread things onto the outer layer like pacifiers, teething rings, etc.

Once the ribbon is all complete and the outer layer is just how you want it to look. You can add things to the top like a bath duckie (don't forget to tie anything you top the cake with on with ribbon in some way!) You can also add spoons into the rolled diapers.

Making a diaper cake is all about creativity. So have fun while you are making the cake. Be creative. The Mum's to be will love your sweet gesture. Plus you end up taking things out of their packaging so they're stuck with your gift and can return the pacifier set that someone threw into a gift bag for them. A good rule of thumb is to buy off of the Baby Registry. This particular cake was for a second child to the family so I got a few odds and ends that I knew my friend would appreciate.

Now it's your turn! Comment here if you have an questions. Good luck and have fun.
