Diaper Cake Part 1

Since I need to channel my diaper cake creations for a baby shower tomorrow for a very dear friend, I figured I would share my master piece creation for my best friend in the whole wide world's baby. When Amy told me she was expecting, I immediately wanted to out do any other creations I've ever made.

I remember seeing diaper cakes online and noticing how they go for an enormous amount of money. Some of these cakes are hundreds of dollars and you can't even take them apart! Phooey. When a co-worker's wife was expecting a little over a year ago, my friend, Dana explained how easy it is to make these cakes. She explained all you really need is a lot of size 3 diapers (apparently this is the size babies hang out in the most), some newborn or size 1 swaddlers for the top (immediate use), lots of rubber bands and ribbon, and finally any other accessories you would want to add to the creation.

I wish I had a picture of Jeff and Beth's diaper cake I made for them. It was fairly large and I added a lot of bibs, spoons, pacifiers, etc. It was quite cute and I ended up showing Beth how to make diaper cakes for her friends. Note to newbies...don't go rogue until you've got the basics down.

So when I set out to make the "World's Most Massive Diaper Cake," I had to fly back to NH for the shower. I didn't even bother buying the supplies until I got back east. My mom and I went to Target in Concord to purchase the supplies. Since this was Amy's baby, money was not a worry for me. Luckily I had told my mom about needing diapers and she picked up an extra large Sam's Club box of Huggies size 3. So I just needed to pick up the immediate use diapers. Since this was to be epic, I decided the base was going to have a Bumbo seat on the inside.

Also since I was home, I headed out to Dunkin' Donuts for a coffee date with an old friend. We don't have Dunkins' in Colorado (I know, blasphamy!) When I was out, my mom and step dad rolled and tied a BUNCH of diapers for me. I will be forever thankful. So I came home all hopped up on Dunkins and wrapped the diapers around the base. (Don't mind my audience and sleeping dogs in the background. I kept saying how this was going to be epic).

Next, I needed to artfully stack the rest of the diapers and start attaching the outter elements.

And ta-da! It was completed. I ran out of ribbon so the bibs held the diaper layer together. There were a bunch of teething rings, pacifiers, spoons, toys, and the top contained a rubber duckie. Oh and don't forget, inside there was a water pouring bucket for baths with numerous organic baby bath supplies and a bottle cleaner. There were some onesies and some cute pajamas. Underneath I made a Red Sox baby blanket (a whole other post on that to come). I wanted to do Bruins but the NHL doesn't have released fleece fabric for sale (jerks). I'll admit, I spent over $200 for this cake, but she was able to use every item on it. It was a huge hit at the shower and baby Andrew loves his Boston Red Sox blankie from Auntie Jenn. Here is another picture of the top up close.

I'll make sure I post photos of the cake I'll be making today/tomorrow. It's not going to be as massive. I promise.

Tootles for now!
